What is Reverse Osmosis?
Reverse Osmosis is the process of forcing water through a
semi-permeable membrane to only allow water molecules through.  The
technology was developed sometime in the 1950's to make sea water
drinkable.  Because of the extremely small size of the pores in the
membrane many contaminants in water cannot pass through.  The figure
on the right gives you an idea of how the membrane works.  This forcing
of the water through the membrane, added to the carbon and sediment
filters, makes the Reverse Osmosis water purification system superior in
terms of removing impurities from your drinking water.

Is it better than bottled water?
Bottled water is actually considered to be food, and therefore falls under the guidelines of the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA), which has looser standards than the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which governs the
quality of tap water.  Essentially, tap water has a higher standard of testing than bottled water, and is also tested more
frequently to ensure consistent quality.  An NRDC study showed that about
25% of bottled water is actually tap water.
